The Shang Tea Blog is the educational arm of the Shang Tea company. We hope to use this space to share more information about tea, chinese tea culture, and industry news. Shang Tea Company was founded by owner Zehua Shang, and we specialize in white tea which we produce ourselves. In addition to white tea, Shang also produces green tea, jasmine tea, and red/black tea. We are excited to use this blog to engage with other tea drinkers and also to focus on the tea topics that you want to hear about, so please let us know if there is a specific question that you want us to answer!

Tea Research: Antimutagenic Effects of Tea

We recently came across a very interesting study from 2000 that sought to determine whether white tea or green tea are more effective at preventing DNA mutations. In this study they mixed a potent carcinogen with salmonella, since salmonella has very similar DNA to humans, and they recorded the number of mutations that occurred in the Salmonella. Then they did the same tests, but they also mixed in green tea in one set of tests and white tea in the other, to see if they prevented mutations, and...

Tea in the News: Tea Can Slow Down Weight Gain

A recent study by Dr. Joshua Lambert from Penn State studied the effect of EGCG (a powerful catechin found in tea) on the weight of mice. Dr. Lambert determined that the mice who were given EGCG at the same amount of food, but lost weight compared to the group that was not given EGCG. Tea in the News: Tea Drinkers Less Likely to Carry MRSA

A recent study has revealed a possible link between drinking tea and a reduction in the odds of nasal MRSA carriage. In particular, researchers found that those who drank either coffee or tea had a 50% relative reduction in nasal MRSA carriage, while those who drank both had a 67% relative reduction. Tea in the News: Tea is just as hydrating as water

In a recent study, volunteers were asked to drink either four cups of tea or four cups of warm water. Then they were tested for common markers of hydration including electrolytes, total protein, urea, creatinine, and osmolality. After the data was assessed by a professional statistician, the research team found no significant difference between the group that drank tea and the group that drank water leading to the conclusion that tea is as hydrating as water.Read the full study by clicking here...
